Utrecht is central and outside controlled airspace: one of the fastest cities to hire a drone pilot for. The Dom, the canals, the new station area and the festival grounds on the edge of the city have all been in our frame before.

With Skymotion you hire one aerial unit: drone pilot, drones, cameras and where needed a camera operator, spotter and RT operator. We work out in advance what the airspace in Utrecht allows and which agreements are needed, so on the shooting day you only deal with the shot.

Airspace

Utrecht: free airspace, quick to plan

Utrecht lies outside all CTRs; there is no air traffic control to register with. We fly under our Specific-category authorisation and plan most shots within days. Above the motorways around the city the rules of Rijkswaterstaat apply.

Example locations

Filming in and around Utrecht: wherever the shot calls for it

We fly anywhere in and around Utrecht the story calls for: city centre, industry, water, countryside. Below are a few places productions often ask for, with what to keep in mind for each.

  • 01
Groene Hart: Woerden, Oudewater and Montfoort

we filmed there for a TV series about the Netherlands from the air.

  • 02
    Dom tower and the wharves

classic Utrecht, best in low light.

  • 03
    Station area and Jaarbeurs

    new architecture and events.

  • 04
    Strijkviertelplas

festival grounds where we filmed with crowds in frame.

  • 05
    Amelisweerd and the Kromme Rijn

estates; the manager's permission is needed.

Permissions and planning

How we arrange a shooting day in Utrecht

Authorisation and requests

We fly under our Specific-category authorisation from the Dutch ILT; outside a CTR no request with air traffic control is needed.

Local agreements

In the centre we coordinate time and place with the City of Utrecht; at festivals with the organiser. Take-off on estates and in nature areas is only possible with the manager's permission, which the production arranges.

Planning

Often planned within a few days; for events and city-centre shoots a little earlier because of the municipality. If the shot requires a street or square to be cordoned off, we flag that well in advance so the production can plan for it.

On the shooting day

We arrive on set on time, brief with the director and DOP, and you watch live on the monitor. Then we fly until the shot is in, while a spotter keeps an eye on the airspace and the surroundings.

FAQ

Hiring a drone pilot in Utrecht: questions

Can you film with a drone in Utrecht?

Yes. Utrecht lies outside controlled airspace, so no request with air traffic control is needed. We fly under our Specific-category authorisation from the Dutch ILT; in the centre we coordinate time and place with the municipality.

How quickly can a drone pilot be on set in Utrecht?

Outside a CTR it often works within a few days, sometimes the next day. Send the location, date and shot and you hear the same day what is possible.

What does it cost to hire a drone pilot in Utrecht?

That depends on the drone and camera, the crew that comes along, the airspace, the travel time and the length of the shooting day; that is why we do not publish standard prices. You usually get a tailored quote the same day.

Which drone do you use in Utrecht?

Usually the DJI Inspire 3 (8K, full-frame) or a Mavic for quick shots, FPV for dynamic footage through and alongside objects, and the heavy-lift Alta X when your own cinema camera has to go up.

Need a drone pilot in Utrecht?

Send the location, date and the shot you want — you'll hear quickly what's possible and what it costs, usually the same day.
